When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a key Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight place.
At 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.
This talent is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he brought to the side.
In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Given a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.
Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand fans might be surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.
"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to play for both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official senior international match.
He has played for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While teenage Lamine chose Spain, Brahim opted to represent Morocco.
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team chase trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
