Two men, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in June. The 55-year-old, a colleague of the female victim, told law enforcement last week that there had been an accident—but rejected murder.

Addressing the media recently, a spokesman for the state prosecutor stated the brothers were being detained on "high likelihood of murder".

Personal details of those involved have not been disclosed by law enforcement, in following Austrian law.

The vanishing of the mother and child was first reported by the female victim's relative, who lives in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Investigators revealed the 55-year-old suspect claimed at the time she had gone on an prolonged visit with her child to visit her parents in the nation of Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then noted as being active overseas several times.

But when officers examined the woman's home, her smartphone was located.

A witness also stated listening to a loud noise in the flat, and shouts of "mama" on the day the two were thought to have disappeared.

A wider official inquiry was launched, with authorities uncovering various messages sent from the woman's phone—among them a job termination message to her company and texts to the male associate.

A senior police official stated to reporters on that day that a storage facility had been rented out before the mother and child went missing and a freezer had been positioned inside.

The two suspects extracted the appliance from the storage space on the very day the woman and her child disappeared, she revealed. And a shortly afterward, they purchased another freezer.

Officials say they think this indicates the deaths were planned in advance.

"The cause of death was not identifiable due to the advanced decay of the bodies," the official stated.

A legal representative—from the legal authorities—stated the exact sequence of events is yet to be determined, but the victims were carefully placed and went unnoticed during a prior examination.

Although the men were taken into custody in the summer, it was not until November 12 that the suspect acknowledged an event and to hiding the bodies. He disputes any murderous intent, authorities confirmed.

At the same time, his brother confessed to a attempt to hide evidence but disputed knowledge of a murder.

The two suspects are presently in custody awaiting trial in detention centers in two Austrian cities, situated at a distance.

Through a combined announcement, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister said the "alleged double murder... symbolizes the swift and cruel conclusion of a mother and child and uncovers a cruel system".

"Females of all ages are falling victim to homicide due to the sole reason that they are female," they added.

"Gender-based killings are a profoundly embedded and widespread concern that we must address decisively."
