A wheel comes loose from the McLaren of Lando Norris after he crashed into fellow driver Oscar Piastri at the opening of the US GP sprint event.
McLaren Formula 1 executives Brown and Stella blamed rival drivers for the collision between Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.
The Australian driver, ahead of Norris in the standings by 22 points, bounced into his team-mate after colliding with the Hulkenberg.
The collision took both team drivers from the event, along with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, who was on the inside of the Sauber driver.
Brown, the team's chief executive officer, told broadcasters that some of the racing at the front was "unprofessional", stating: "Clearly Hulkenberg hit Oscar and he had no business being where he was."
The team boss Andrea Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are displeased that we didn't have the opportunity to compete."
"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of expertise don't act with appropriate caution. Enter the first corner, make sure you don't damage competitors and carry on."
McLaren suggested that Stella was pointing to both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.
However, former champion Damon Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he thought Piastri had not demonstrated enough awareness of the dangers of the first corner of an F1 race when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.
Piastri had a stronger launch than Norris and initially competed on the outside on the ascending approach to the turn.
However he then moved inside in an attempt to get a advantage on his teammate on the exit, only to collide with Hulkenberg.
Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I haven't seen what occurred, I tried to move inside on Norris and we were both quite distant from the apex and then got a hit and it propelled me into Norris. Unfortunate."
Norris said: "I just got hit, right? I did nothing wrong. Further back things happened and I just got unlucky and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more carefully. It's more people behind just being a bit reckless and we are the consequence of that."
Alonso said: "At one point I thought I was in the right place on the inner side, but some cars came very quickly from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the center."
Hulkenberg, who had earned a season-best fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the strong performance from the previous day in the bin. Just messy."
"Piastri steered inward pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and way out of the first corner but I can't just disappear."
"I had Alonso challenge on the inside and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Oscar turned in and the collision was unavoidable."
The team will analyze the crash with their drivers but not until the race weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before grand prix qualifying at 22:00 BST on the weekend.
The team principal said: "In general disappointed but we take it on the chin, we are now focusing on fixing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the weekend from there."
"Our team holds a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the possibility to race, compete fairly and utilize our capabilities."
"The points are the key thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just prudence. A bit more prudence would be good for all involved."
The race was won by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who closed in on both team racers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and thirty-three adrift of the Briton.
The team boss said: "The implication is what the maths says - we lost eight points with both racers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two skilled racers. We anticipate just some standard competition."
The Red Bull driver said he was approaching the title race race by race.
