Israelis have come together around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the conditions of the agreement.

A senior Palestinian official familiar with the discussions revealed that an evening round of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.

The representative explained the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, amid differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the deal.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have still not produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the two sides.

Key Issues in Negotiations

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
  • Future administration of the territory

Citizen Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young Hagar - whose brother endured the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas fighters - explained: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until every captive return not a single person will be secure."

"After we see all home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that around seventy percent of the population prefer the war to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the location of the music event, mourners assembled to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In the urban center, attacks were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone areas and in the eastern district of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"As the dusk comes, the dread appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.

"My family are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had accepted the remains of six people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of the city indicated additional victims had been brought there. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south, health workers said.

Gaza's health ministry said a significant number of the {territ
