Heavy Precipitation Aggravate Conditions for Displaced Gazans, Officials Alert

Heavy precipitation over the recent period have intensified the precarious living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians in the territory, as reported by aid groups.

"Awful" Conditions Brings Severe Dangers

A spokesman described the weather overnight as "terrible", with rain so intense that up to 15cm (6in) of water accumulated on the ground.

"The recent weather was exceptionally difficult for the residents. The heavy rains were so intense... And the gusts were so powerful," said the spokesperson.

Officials express extreme concern that minors living in makeshift shelters in soaked attire will contract hypothermia and other sicknesses.

Deaths and Significant Loss

Health authorities have reported that one baby has passed away from hypothermia and a minimum of 11 other people have died in roof cave-ins triggered by the severe weather.

Other reports put a higher death toll. Officials stated that multiple residential buildings had fully given way and dozens had collapsed partially.

Aid Distribution Deemed Inadequate

Groups have stepped up distribution of tents, blankets and clothes following the halt in hostilities began, but they stress there is continues to be not enough aid reaching those in need.

"Officials are striving constantly to bring in that assistance and to hand it out, but the size of the requirements is so immense that we are faced with a great number of individuals and children who are really enduring hardship each evening," cautioned one spokesperson.

Relief organizations have highlighted the imperative for "expanded and ongoing relief to meet immediate and ongoing needs."
