Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This latest installment marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters returning to the fray.

"Returning to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard reveals.

An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Favorites

It has been established that a trio of different characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Legendary Status

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the exact moment he got the offer from the series creator.

"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which made Lillard feeling very trepidatious.

"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now represented in every single Scream mask that appears every October 31st."

The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom

Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.

"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Theories and Excitement Run High

While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow still living in a strange shared situation. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.

Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
