Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An new acronym came to light a few months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, per insights from medical experts including paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for physicians to care for a minor who has lost their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Reported Truce

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are continuing. Authorities rejects these accusations, consistent with how it denies everything it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, we are told, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that initially championed togetherness has now become a cynical way to whitewash war.
