England to Begin the European Championship 2028 Quest at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

The English squad will initiate their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they secure the expected qualification for a competition hosted across the majority of the UK and the Irish Republic.

Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an Three Lions game since May 2016, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to host the Three Lions for their first match on Saturday 10 June 2028.

The team are scheduled to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top their group, their round of 16 match would occur at St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean commencing the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Launch and Protest

The tournament was launched at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were confronted as they arrived the venue by approximately 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel to be removed from global football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Banners were displayed with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Timeline

The first match of the European Championship will be staged at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will involve the Welsh team if they secure a place.

The national stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the final, which will be held on July 9, 2028 with a kick-off time at late afternoon.

It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be used for European club finals from the upcoming season, will cater to households and help connect with a broader range of viewers.

Participating Countries

The Irish team are scheduled to play their opening match at the Dublin Arena and the Tartan Army would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.

Each host nation’s squad will participate in the preliminary stage; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for Euro 2028 through that route.

Venues and Knockout Stage

The Birmingham venue and The North London arena round out the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight played at every host’s main arena.

The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it was revealed the Belfast stadium could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.

Leadership Comment

“The event will be a tournament for the fans and a festival of everything we value about the sport – its passion and ability to unite individuals.”

In excess of three million admissions, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be released to fans.
