A servicemember of the Air National Guard is on the mend after he was critically injured in an targeted attack last month in Washington DC.
The parents of Andrew Wolfe, 24, say "the injury to his head is gradually improving and that he's beginning to 'look more like himself,'" said the state's chief executive the governor.
The family anticipates the Air Force staff sergeant to be in intensive treatment for the coming fortnight, and they feel optimistic about his progress, said the governor.
Staff Sgt Wolfe was one of a pair of state guardsmen injured by gunfire when a shooter opened fire in proximity to the presidential residence on 26 November. His fellow guardsmember, twenty-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, succumbed to her wounds.
"Our request remains for all state residents and the nation's citizens for their thoughts and prayers!" Morrisey declared.
Morrisey attended a candlelight gathering on last Friday night for Staff Sgt Wolfe at Musselman High School in his hometown, where the serviceman was once a student.
A pastor at the event shared a statement from the guardsman's mother and father, Jason and Melody Wolfe.
"We know that there is a difficult journey to go," they wrote, according to regional media Metro News.
"However our belief keeps us optimistic. We remain thankful for the well-wishes and the support from people all over the world."
Previously, the governor said the serviceman had acknowledged medical staff with a thumbs-up and was capable of move his toes.
Police have charged the suspected shooter, an Afghan national named the suspect, with premeditated homicide and attempted murder.
Prior to his arrival to the United States in two years ago, he was once a member of a special forces unit in a paramilitary group that operated alongside US forces in the South Asian nation.
The injured airman was one of 2,000 militia personnel whom the former president deployed to the Washington DC in last summer as part of his policy initiative in Democratic-led cities.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the former president said he desired another 500 National Guard troops deployed to the District of Columbia.
The Trump administration has also referenced the shooting as a justification for further immigration crackdown measures.
They have halted naturalization proceedings for immigrants from 19 countries that were part of a entry restriction announced over the summer, among them the suspect's home country.
